Breathing Piece
BREATHING PIECE is a live performance where two performers and a conductor use only their breath to create an immersive, layered soundscape that explores the body’s rhythms and invites the audience into a visceral, physical experience.
BREATHING PIECE is a performance in which two performers and one conductor create a composition using only their breath. Through inhalations, exhalations, puffs, and hisses, the performers build an intense, layered soundscape that follows the dramaturgy of hyperventilation. As the audience is gradually submerged in darkness, the piece fosters a direct and physical connection between performer and spectator, inviting listeners to tune in to the sound of the living body.
This work is part of a research project into biometric systems and their expressive potential. With a strong focus on the body and its internal processes, Anthony van Gog and Maarten Heijnens create ‘physical scores’ in which the body itself becomes the instrument. Following this project, they began developing their second physical score, HEARTSCORE, which was conducted by the rhythm of each other’s heartbeat.
